A team of biologists, mathematicians and engineers from the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, Mississippi, is studying the rostrum of the Paddlefish to determine if its structure, strength and resilience can be replicated and used for protective structures and protective gear for the U.S. military. Paddlefish are native to the Lower Mississippi River and are one of the largest freshwater fishes in North America. They can measure up to 5 feet long and weigh more than 60 pounds.
