Soldiers and Airmen within the District of Columbia National Guard provided traffic control to pedestrians and vehicles during the Women's March 2019. They were deputized by members of the Metropolitan Police Department to support civilian authorities and to ensure civilians exercised their rights safely. Guard members were authorized to take in "temporary custody" rioters, looters and other persons who committed crimes. National Guard members were also authorized to provide prompt medical attention to persons in reasonable need and first aid as necessary. The District of Columbia National Guard continues its tradition of supporting the city in many ways, ranging from inaugurations to helping during national security events to weather emergencies.
