Video by Staff Sgt. Thomas Swanson

    102nd Intelligence Wing

A T-33 Shooting Star static display honoring Gen. Daniel “Chappie” James Jr. at Joint Base Cape Cod, Massachusetts was taken down on September 14, 2018. The aircraft that had been on display for decades is not actually one that Chappie flew, but was painted to memorialize his service. It is in extremely poor condition so it will not be refurbished as stated in the video. Another T-33, in much better condition, is currently being restored and repainted, and will be displayed as part of the 102nd Intelligence Wing’s new static display airpark on Otis Air National Guard Base, Massachusetts.

Gen. James was the first African American four-star general in the United States military and served as an all-weather jet fighter pilot at Otis Air Force Base in the 1950s. In April 1953 he became commander of the 437th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, and in August 1955 he assumed command of the 60th FIS on base.
