    While Taps may be playing in the rolling hills of Arlington National Cemetery, it is not a sad occasion that brings leaders from First Army to this green pasture.

    The acting commanding general of First Army, Major General Erik Peterson, said Pershing’s role and themes were pivotal in not only forming First Army, but the Army of today.

    Peterson spoke a top the hill that is the final resting spot of Pershing, a spot Pershing picked for himself so he could be surrounded by those he served with in World War I.

    Peterson visited the grave sites of Gen Hugh Drum, who had gone from First Army’s Chief of Staff to Commanding General in the beginning of WWII, Gen Omar Bradley, who commanded First Army during Operation Overlord and Gen Courtney Hodges who took over First Army following Bradley. And following in Pershing footsteps First Army laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers.
