On Mar. 22, 1918, the 2d Cavalry Regiment departed Hoboken, New Jersey on the U.S.S. Martha Washington bound for France. Of those on board, was 1st Sgt. Gustiff Engel of Kronos Troop. The first order authorizing identification tags for the U.S. Army was issued in Dec. 1906. This regulation was modified in 1916 and again in 1918 to ensure all Soldiers were issued two tags – one to keep on their person and one to be provided to the person in charge of records. The ID tag contained the Soldier’s assigned serial number in addition to his name, rank, Regiment and a U.S.A. designation. This video is part of a series commemorating the 100 years since 2CR's participation in World War 1.
