ANSBACH, Germany- Soldiers from the 2-227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade out of Fort Hood Texas conduct a roll-on landing in a HH-60 MEDEVAC helicopter, March 7, 2018, at Katterbach Army Airfield in Ansbach, Bavaria, Germany. A roll-on landing is conducted under limited power conditions such as a single engine failure. Instead of performing a constant angle, constant reduction in speed landing to the surface, the pilot will maintain the aircrafts speed till the aft wheel touches the ground. At that point the pilot applies aft cyclic and uses the thrust produced by the rotor blades to essentially slow the aircraft down. This technique is known as aerodynamic braking and uses much less engine power than a constant angle touchdown. (U.S. Army video by Charles Rosemond)
