Narration:
Nineteen Officers from the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s Medical School in Tokyo recently visited Camp Zama’s U.S. Army Medical Department as part of a Psychological Officer’s Course. Visiting the Behavioral Health Services department gave students an opportunity to learn about U.S. behavioral health methodology and patient procedures.
Interview: COL Marc Hultquist, Deputy Commander, Clinical Services at U.S. Army Medical Japan.
Narration:
The visit began with a mission briefing by COL Marc Hultquist, Deputy Commander for Clinical Services at U.S. Army Medical Japan followed by presentations from representatives from Behavioral Health Services and Master Resiliency Training offices. Students also heard from additional Camp Zama organizations including Army Community Services, the Army Wellness Center, and the Chaplain’s office, who also provide support for Soldiers and their families.
Interview: 1LT Yasuko Sato, Student JGSDF Medical School
I had the rare opportunity today to hear how the U.S. Army works on a variety of programs that support their soldiers. Especially the program that also supports their family members. I think it is very different from the program that JGSDF provides to support members of JGSDF, so it was very interesting.
Interview: MAJ Kozo Saito, Student JGSDF Medical School
The U.S. Army has the Combat Experience and because of that, their programs to support soldiers are very organized and are designed to support their family members as well. I also realized that when they support soldiers, they also take care of their personal life. I think that’s the part JGSDF needs to work on in the future.
Interview: LTC Toshimichi Fujiwara, Teacher, JGSDF Medical School
Students study most of the stuff we learned here today in their classes every day, but we didn’t have an opportunity to practice it along with our units’ training. I believe we are at the level where we understand it logically but we are actually not at the level to properly implement it. However, now they have a confidence about what we’ve been studying and know how to implement it after we received instruction from the U.S. Army, so it was very beneficial for the students.
Interview: Lt. Col. Susanna J. Steggles, Chief, Behavioral Health Services, MEDDAC Japan
Narration:
After they complete their twelve-week Psychological Therapist course, officers will return to their home units to begin supporting their fellow soldiers as psychological therapists.
Interview: COL Marc Hultquist, Deputy Commander, Clinical Services at U.S. Army Medical Japan.
