As of January 1, virtually all private employers in the state are required to provide paid family leave to their employees (including same-sex, adoptive, and foster parents) to bond with a new child, care for a loved one with a serious health condition or help relieve family pressures when a loved one is called to active military service abroad. The paid family leave program will be phased in over four years; approximately 6.7 million employees will be eligible according to advocacy groups. Employees, under the phase-in, can take up to 8 weeks of paid leave in 2018, 10 weeks in 2019 and 2020, and 12 weeks in 2021.
