Narration:
Firefighters from Camp Zama Fire Station One and Kastner Army Heliport Fire Station recently participated in a night-time Familiarization Aircrew Extraction Exercise at Camp Zama’s airfield. The two teams extinguished a fire and performed rescue operations for six aircrew personnel who were injured by a hard-landing.
Interview: Frank J. Wombwell, Regional Fire Chief, Fire & Emergency Services
Narration:
During the exercise, firefighters learned how to stop a UH-60 Black-Hawk engine quickly in order to rescue the aircrew trapped inside the aircraft.
Interview: Kazutaka Okamoto, Kastner Army Heliport Fire Station 2
It was a different environment working during the hours of darkness compared to a typical daytime exercise. In the daytime, it is very clear and easy to see how things are going when you approach the helicopter or conduct rescue operations inside. However, I felt some difficulty conducting rescue operations in the night time but it was a very good opportunity for me to sharpen my skills.
Interview: Frank J. Wombwell, Regional Fire Chief, Fire & Emergency Services
Narration:
Fire and Emergency Services hold the exercise four-times a year to better prepare for emergency extractions in the field. Reporting for U.S. Army Garrison Japan, this is XXXXXXXX.
