“B” is for Bogue – Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field Bogue, N.C.
In May of 1963, the Chief of Naval Operations designated Bogue Field as a Marine Corps Auxiliary Landing Field to supplement Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina’s parent aviation activity. As Air Station Order 11014 states, ‘the mission of MCALF Bogue is to provide expeditionary airfield support training for the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and to provide a facility for the evaluation of expeditionary airfield equipment’.
Bogue is sited on 837 acres of government property located four miles east of Swansboro, North Carolina. The commanding officer of MCAS Cherry Point is the commander of MCALF Bogue and exercises overall administrative control. The commanding general of 2nd MAW exercises command of 2nd MAW Personnel utilizing MCALF Bogue and, as a tenant, exercises operational control over assigned facilities.
MCALF Bogue is the only site on the East Coast that offers Marine Corps pilots the opportunity to simulate taking-off and landing on aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships; a vital skill they need to maintain to accomplish their missions while conducting forward deployed operations.
