Talks with a CBS reporter about increasing attacks in Tal Afar against Multinational and Iraqi National Forces. Anti-Iraqi forces were digging 28 defensive positions and placing 11 improvised explosive devices on a route coalition forces travel everyday. Multinational and Iraqi forces were engaged by the enemy, manuevered and seized the route. No American casualties, about 50 anti-Iraqi force casualties, and possibly 20 civilians wounded. LTC Reed says soldiers take precautions against hurting civilians. Importance of Tal Afar and the route are described. Says the area has insurgents from other countries and attacks show expertise and training from outside Iraq. Insurgents change methods of attack. LTC Reed says the weak police force allowed the insurgent to come in and plant itself, and they are "halfway there" to stabilizing the area.
