USS Cole (DDG 67) is named in honor of Marine Corps Sgt. Darrell S. Cole, a field bugler, fought as a machine gunner in the Battles of Guadalcanal, Tinian and Saipan. He made four request to convert from bugler to machine gunner before receiving approval. Sgt. Cole then led a machine gun section during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He lead a one man attack, wiping out four hostile positions and destroyed a Japanese strong point.
Cole was killed by an enemy grenade on February 19, 1945 and posthumously award the Medal of Honor for his unselfish acts of heroism.
Darrell Samuel Cole was born in Flat River, Missouri. He was sent to Parris Island, South Carolina, for training and marked as a candidate for Field Music School. After after fighting in the Guadalcanal campaign he joined the 1st Battalion, 23d Marines, which were then forming at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as part of the 4th Marine Division. He fought in the Marianas campaigns and then on to Iwo Jima where he was killed in action and awarded the medal of honor for his acts of heroism.
