Keen Sword is the largest joint, bilateral field training exercise between the U.S. military and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
NARRATION:
In times of tragedy every country should have a recovery plan to ensure the safety of all its people. Airman from the 31st and 33rd rescue squadrons along with the 353rd special operations group work together with their JASDF counterparts in a mass casualty training scenario as part of excercise Keen Sword.
SB:
For us to practice with the JASDF it helps build that relationship between us and the JASDF and executing this mission, which is a pretty complex mission, and so it really test our capability of being able to work together, deconflict and accomplish the mission.
NARRATION:
Air Force and JASDF pararescuemen jump out of a C-130 during the exercise with two air-deployable rubber rafts into the open ocean, rescuing survivors from a simulated downed aircraft.
SB:
I think it went pretty well. There's definitely some hiccups. You can always see the communication barrier playing in throughout the entire event but we were able to break through that in most cases and we were able to work together.
NARRATION:
Mass casualty exercises are vital in ensuring the safety and welfare of both U.S. and Japanese citizens . They assure that in times of crisis, we're prepared and ready to take on any life threatening situations. Airman FIrst Class Thomas Barley, Kadena Air Base, Japan.
