Petty Officer 2nd Class John Gross, a navigator of the watch aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Spencer, ensures the safe navigation of the cutter, Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016 while they are underway in the Caribbean. Navigators aboard cutters are also known as quartermaster of the watch and their job entails them taking and plotting the ships position, monitoring and collecting weather data, and making recommendations to the officer of the deck on course changes if they deviate from their set course.
