    171st Air Refueling Wing

Twenty Six Pennsylvania Air National Guardsmen from the 171st Air Refueling Wing’s Civil Engineering Squadron (171CE) traveled to Lincoln Nebraska Aug. 7, 2016 to Aug. 21, 2016, to partner with the Lincoln Police Department in building a new police training facility. The partnership is part of the innovative readiness training program (IRT), a program that allows active, guard, and reserve military units to get essential training that is not readily available at their home base while at the same time fulfilling domestic needs.

During their training the 171st Civil Engineering Squadron contributed to building a firing range watch tower, a knee wall for the targeting system, dug trenches to connect power and control wiring, installed light units, excavated large amounts of dirt to create 25ft high berms and poured concrete sidewalks in temperatures over 90 degrees.

Two military units were involved in the project, each worked for a two week period. The 165th Airlift Wing from Savannah Georgia worked the first two weeks and the 171st worked the final two weeks to finish the project.

The IRT was born in 1992 a part of the Rebuild America initiative, a challenge to the American people from presidential candidate Bill Clinton. The Senate Armed Forces Committee echoed the Presidents challenge and directed the Department of Defense to increase involvement in meeting domestic needs

Due to the Programs nature of being involved with civic needs, the program also enhances the bond between American citizens and the military. (U.S. Air National Guard Video by Senior Master Sgt. Shawn Monk
