Under Secretary of the Army the Honorable Patrick Murphy, visited with Lt. Gen. Michael Garrett and the senior staff of U.S. Army Central at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, today. Murphy told the unit they are the tip of the spear in supporting Gen. Joseph Votel, U.S. Central Command Commander, and the warfighters in support of conflicts in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. During his visit he was briefed on USARCENT’s role in support of the CENTCOM area or responsibility and how the unit’s man power and budget reduction may impact the vital interest of the United States in the region.
“Well you know it’s funny, I was there and I took a whole page of notes on things I need to take back to the Pentagon. And basically see what I can do, get some more resources, be a little more efficient. And really, some of the stuff that Mike Garrett, General Garrett, and his team are doing out there is just awesome. And using some of the things they’re doing Army wide, is very important.”
USARENT is headquartered at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina, and has a forward headquarters in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, supporting approximately 30,000 service members.
