The Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dedicated its newest survey boats, Hopman and Graham, on Aug. 22, 2016, at Chinook Landing in Fairview, Oregon.
The vessels were built in Roseburg, Oregon, by North River Boats, and are named for two individuals who played a significant role in the direction and accomplishment of the District’s Channels and Harbors mission: Maj. Gen. (Ret) Jackson Graham and Robert Hopman, two men who, on their passing, left a legacy of excellence.
The Graham, based in Coos Bay, Oregon, is 27 feet long and surveys small harbors and channels on the Oregon Coast, from Tillamook to Gold Beach. The Hopman is 25 feet long and based at the U.S. Moorings in Portland, Oregon. It provides hydrosurvey data for areas along the Columbia and lower Willamette rivers.
The Portland District has worked for more than a century to keep Oregon’s waterways navigable. Corps survey vessels are essential tools in accomplishing that mission. Portland District survey boats travel from Cape Disappointment on the southern Washington coast, to the Chetco River on the Southern Oregon coast and east from the Pacific Ocean up the Columbia River to McNary Dam, providing vital data to the dredge crews who maintain the state’s water channels.
