Sergeant Major Timothy Fitzgerald, Department of the Army, Provost Sergeant Major on Antiterrorism Awareness Month

August marks the Army’s seventh annual Anti-terrorism Awareness Month. Terrorist-related threats during this past year and the recent attack in Orlando, Florida, demonstrates the realities of the risks we face. Terrorist tactics are persistent and evolving. To prevent and respond to terrorist activities, we must produce “vigilance” and “awareness” through our individual and collective action.

This past year, the Army anti-terrorism initiatives have centered on community awareness, physical security, countering insider threats, and measuring anti-terrorism effectiveness. Technological advancements and the prolific use of unmanned aerial systems has increased risk and the need to protect people, information, and facilities on our Army installations and standalone facilities. We must remain actively involved in our anti-terrorism and protection efforts.

Army leaders should encourage all community members to sustain vigilance, report suspicious activity, understand the indicators of radicalization and violent extremism, and be prepared to respond to an active shooter. Awareness of the terrorist threat and an understanding of individual protective measures are the hallmarks of our defense.

The first priority of all leaders is to prevent an attack and protect our Soldiers, families, and civilian personnel. Therefore, we encourage leaders to continuously assess our security posture, improve awareness, and extend our community outreach efforts. Every person is a sensor – if you See Something Suspicious, Say Something (REPORT IT) so military police and law enforcement can investigate.

For more information on how to be part of our anti-terrorism team please go to one of the websites at the end of this message. By working together, we present a united defense for the strength of our Nation.

    Assist, Protect, Defend
