Soldiers from the HIARNG and 9TH MSC competed for the title of Soldier of the Year and NCO of the Year in the 2016 Best Warrior Competition. The competitors faced a variety of challenges including an APFT test, marksmanship, land navigation and other various obstacles. The warriors started on March 4, 2016 where they slept overnight at the Bellows Air Force Station. They had a full day of activity the next day when they took their APFT test, proficiency in M4 rifles and M9 pistols. They last event that day was a combination on land navigation tests during the day and at night.
The following day, they flew to the Big Island for another day of obstacles. They repelled off of towers, took on fire fight scenarios, reacting to chemical and gas attacks, practiced first aid in mock drills, and many other physical activities. The slept overnight on the Big Island and woke up at 5:00 p.m. the next morning for their final events.
After the day was completed, the winners were announced back on Oahu.
Specialist Ralph A. Custodio took home the title of Soldier of the Year.
Sergeant Kalani K. Apilado took home the title of NCO of the Year.
Both soldiers will now train and represent the Hawaii Army National Guard in Arizona for the next level of competition against competitors from around the nation.
