The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is working with partners, including the Columbia River Estuary Study Task Force and the Bonneville Power Administration, to remove wood pilings and move 900 feet of jetty stone from seven locations along the 8,800 foot structure, creating openings and restoring hydraulic connections from the bay to the Columbia River. The Corps completed a similar project in 1995, breaching a 500-foot section of the South Jetty. Studies followed, showing that creating more openings would support efforts to increase survival of salmonids and other endangered species that rely on the estuary.
