The Navy commissioned the newest littoral combat ship, USS Jackson (LCS 6), Saturday, December 5, during a 10:00 a.m. ceremony at the Port of Gulfport's West pier.
Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Ray Mabus, former Mississippi governor, delivered the ceremony's principal address and placed Jackson in commission. Dr. Katherine Holmes Cochran served as sponsor of the ship. The ceremony is highlighted by a time-honored Navy tradition when Dr. Cochran gave the first order to "man our ship and bring her to life!"
Cmdr. Allen D. Adkins, a native of Dallas, is the commanding officer of the ship and leads the core crew of 40 officers and enlisted personnel. Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama built the 3,100-ton Jackson. The ship is 417 feet in length, has a beam of 104 feet, and a navigational draft of 14 feet. The ship uses two gas turbine and two diesel engines to power four steerable water jets to speeds in excess of 40 knots.
LCSs are designed to be high-speed, shallow draft multi-mission ships capable of operating independently or with an associated strike group. It is designed to defeat growing littoral threats and provide access and dominance in coastal waters. A fast, maneuverable, and networked surface combatant, Jackson provides the required warfighting capabilities and operational flexibility to execute focused missions in surface warfare, mine warfare and anti-submarine warfare.
