Air Force Staff Sergeant Jason Bailey takes us to Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, where innovation has changed the way airmen fuel the fight. 22 Fairchild KC -135’s are slated to be upgraded, which will extend the life of the tanker until the year 2040.
Narration: Members of the 92 Air Refueling Wing recently welcomed home an old friend. The wing’s flagship, KC-135 Stratotanker Number 0092, returned after a few modifications and is the first of the fleet to receive new block 45 upgrades.
Capt. McBride: “The biggest thing that changed was the engine instruments went from mostly analog with a few digital pieces to completely digital.”
Narration: Captain Timothy McBride and his crew successfully piloted the tanker back to Fairchild, where an eager audience couldn’t wait to get a first look at the up-grades.
Narration: there’re quite a few new bells and whistles on 0092 to cover, but
Capt. McBride: “if you ever go and rent a real nice luxury car, you’re going to see features in that you wouldn’t find in a cheaper car, and once you learn how to use those features, you grow to love them.”
Narration: and the mission will clearly benefit from this upgrade.
Capt. McBride: “The block 45 upgrade makes our mission a little bit easier in the sense that our ability to maintain a more stable platform has increased.”
Narration: More KC -135s should be receiving this upgrade in the near future. From Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington, I’m (Air Force) Staff Sergeant Jason Bailey.
