U.S. Navy sailors and Marines stationed at Naval Station Norfolk fill sandbags and load amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) with supplies. USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) sorties in advance of Hurricane Joaquin. Five aircraft carriers and three big-deck amphibious assault ships are homeported in Norfolk as part of the world's largest fleet concentration area, which includes Naval Station Norfolk and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story. One carrier, Abraham Lincoln in is lay-up and not able to sortie. Another, the George Washington, is currently on its way to Norfolk from San Diego after shifting home ports from Sasebo, Japan.
