Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Evans relinquished his duties as senior enlisted leader for the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, to Command Sgt. Maj. Dale Sump in a change of responsibility ceremony Sept. 2 on the Cavalry Parade Field at Fort Riley, Kansas.
Evans assumed duties as the senior enlisted leader for 1st ABCT on February 10, 2014 and recently returned with the brigade from successful nine-month deployment to Kuwait and Iraq.
“It has truly been a pleasure to coach, teach, mentor and stand beside a great group of professionals,” Evans said. “I am confident they will continue doing great things in the future and the Army is in great shape because of them.”
Sump, a native of Iowa, most recent assignment was senior enlisted leader for the 2nd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, located at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
“I am humbled and honored to be selected to lead such a distinct unit as the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team," Sump said. “You have a distinguished lineage that we will continue to build upon.”
Evans was awarded the Legion of Merit medal prior to the ceremony.
The ceremony concluded with the singing of the "Big Red One" and Army songs.
