The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) creates planning aids and technologies for more efficient and effective use of power, energy and water. The Virtual Forward Operating Base (VFOB) seeks to integrate design and analysis functions for contingency base camps, providing commanders with a holistic design tool for planning considerations. VFOB provides a virtual environment to design and lay out a base from scratch or from existing templates, enhancing construction scheduling and bill of materials development. Automated Construction of Expeditionary Shelters (ACES) provides the capability to print custom-designed expeditionary structures and components (i.e. beams, trusses and vaults) on demand, in the field, using locally-available materials. ACES technology provides flexibility in design, application and transfer of constructed shelters, while aesthetically and functionally tailoring the shelters to the environment.
