Exercise Joint Warrior 151 is being conducted in Scottish waters. SNMG2 (Standing Nato Maritime Group 2) practice aerial defense exercises. Soundbites of Rear Admiral Brad Williamson, commander of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG 2) and Captain Lyle Hall, commander USS Vicksburg, Flagship of SNMG2.

    1. (00:00) Soundbite. Rear Admiral Brad Williamson. Commander of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG 2):
“I think when you have this many units out here, 50 units, 70 aircrafts, almost 14,000 personnel involved in this exercise, it provides you the magnitude of training that is more realistic to how things might unfold in the real world. Most of the nations that are participating in this cannot give this kind of training by themselves, they need to come to an event like Joint Warrior that provides so many units, so many personnel, so many aircraft, submarines, and provides a realistic training environment, of course, in conditions out here that allow us to interact as opposing forces within the scenario“.
“As I’ve said, NATO is a defensive alliance and the security of our members is bolstered by the fact that they understand that we are out here, we are doing complex training, we are ready, we are cohesive and we know how to do our jobs and if the Alliance calls upon us we will be ready“.

    2. (00:59) Captain Lyle Hall. Commander USS Vicksburg Flagship of SNMG2.
“The one thing you’ll learn from dealing at sea is we probably have more in common with the officers that are embarking us from the other countries than I do with my neighbor that lives down the street“.
“The whole purpose of those first three to four to five days is to develop that integration. During that we will do boarding exercises, UNREPs, formation steaming, surface exercises, where we actually target each other for training as well as air defense exercises. Once we complete that portion, then we go into free play, which is really a scenario and if you could tell me what is going to be in that scenario I would appreciate it ’cause it would help my planning“.
