In January of 2013 Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III released a new Air Force vision: an Air Force “Powered by Airmen, Fueled by Innovation.”

In line with this new vision, 7th Bomb Wing Commander Col Michael Bob Starr hosted a Leadership and Innovation Forum at Dyess AFB. Col Starr dialogued with West Texas Innovation Network Director Michael Mikeworth to discuss innovation in the Air Force. Col Starr also encouraged audience participation via presentain.

Later he described how he motivates innovative thinkers in the Air Force:

“(35:07) I think the most motivating thing we can give someone who is innovative is…giving them the chance to implement the idea and to actually see it through to fruition or failure because to them it doesn’t matter, because if it fails they still learn from it. The most motivational thing we can do is to listen to them.”

After the forum, Mr. Mikeworth summarized his philosophy on how to cultivate innovation:

“An idea is more organic than it is mechanical. The idea has to be watered, and receive breathing room. It’s the job of supervisors….what can I do to clear a path so that this organic thing can grow and be healthy.”
Overall Col Starr and Mr. Mikeworth’s dialogue was a success, , promoting innovation in professional circles and even in families. Both 7th Operation Support Squadron Supervisor, Tom Zipperich and his son gained new insights:
“I’ve known Col Starr, I worked for him when he was the OSS commander and I know that he is somebody who develops leaders. That’s one of his passions and goals. So when he advertised this I thought it would be something worth coming to and it was.”
The forum attracted co-workers and even families. Mr. Zipperich and his son both attended the forum:
“I came to hear what he had to say, I’m leaving this place with something, I learned something.”
Future Leadership and Innovation Forums will be held monthly. To find out more about the next Commander’s Leadership and Innovation Forum, contact MSgt Jeremy Pickett or SSgt Elizabeth Mann.
