Researchers demonstrate an experimental autonomous underwater vehicle at Camp Pendleton, Calif. The small robot crawled out into the ocean from one of the base’s beaches and successfully breached the surf during a trial. Using tank-like treads, the AUV has the ability to follow pre-programmed instructions that allow it to function independent of remote control. It can also serve as a platform for an array of sensory equipment. (Video includes HD POV footage)
