An unconfirmed tornado struck the Fort Chaffee Joint Maneuver Training Center near Fort Smith around 1500 on 23 July causing substantial damage to approximately 20 barracks buildings on the post. No buildings were destroyed, most had roofs damaged and siding peeled off.
The damaged area consists of a four-block area near the center of the post. Power is currently out to approximately half of the main post area due to numerous transformers and power lines down.
Fort Chaffee engineering and Soldiers from several units have begun picking up the debris and clearing streets so that power crews can access the damaged area to perform repairs
