Lead: it's another dry start to the summer in Colorado. And with that, the air force academy is providing critical support to the surrounding community. Jon Zanone has more.
Along with other military installations in the Pikes Peak region, the Air Force Academy is providing fire crews to help battle a wildfire burning about fifteen miles east of the academy.
Ron Prettyman deputy fire chief: "we're offering some mutual aid support to our neighbor fire departments. We're going to have a couple of engines - actually three engines and some support crews to go with that"
Fire apparatus and crews are not the only support. The Academy Airfield is providing a base for air assets battling this fire.
For Prettyman, the lesson's learned from last year's wildfire season have proved invaluable.
Prettyman: since last year's Waldo Canyon event, we've actually had the opportunity to kind of network and correspond with folks in the area, so we've really had a great opportunity to go out and figure out what our local partners are doing, who the experts in the those areas, who we need to talk to when we have a situation and where we need to go when they have a situation we need to help them"
