The U.S. Marine Corps has chartered the MATILDA 1, a contractor-owned/contractor-operated Stern Landing Vessel (SLV), to support service-level modernization and littoral experimentation. During the initial charter period, the vessel will operate across a broad geographic range including the West Pacific an Oceana. As a purpose-built SLV, the MATILDA 1 utilizes a shallow-draft design and specialized stern ramp to enable capability sets—comprising both personnel and equipment—to land directly on diverse shorelines. This provides a vital maneuver and sustainment link in shallow coastal waters that operates independently and is distinct from traditional amphibious operations.
