In the last few years, the name Harlem Hellfighters evoked confusion for some, intrigue for others, and great pride for those who know the stories of valor and triumph. Lesser known are the stories of tragedy and lives cut short.
Since they gained recognition in 1918, when a journalist wrote about the warrior-spirit of Henry Johnson and Needham Roberts battling two dozen German soldiers in the fields of France, the Harlem Hellfighters went from a determined group of “Colored” Soldiers to the premiere sustainment brigade of the New York Army National Guard with service at home and abroad leaving an indelible mark wherever they went.

The 369th Sustainment Brigade served from September 15th, 2022 to July 5th, 2023 as the premiere theater sustainment brigade in the US Central Command area of responsibility. 369th SB provides mission command of sustainment operations to support troops in contact, reset the theater, manage materiel, and optimize theater distribution. Foster regional partnerships through security cooperation and host nation collaboration. O/O, executes expeditionary sustainment operations to support full range contingency operations.
New York Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to the 442nd Military Police Company participate in a ceremony recognizing their winning of the Fiscal Year 2023 Major General Harry H. Bandholtz Award at Camp Smith Training Site, near Peekskill, N.Y., on March 23, 2024.
