    PRAIRIE SOLDIER

The Nebraska Air National Guard fire department participated in a full-scale emergency exercise at the Lincoln Airport, Sept. 14, 2021. The firefighters were part of a large scale exercise called MARE (Major Accident Response Exercise). The M.A.R.E Exercise provides valuable training for the NEANG firefighters and helps the refine best practices and procedures when responding to an emergency of this magnitude.

This year’s scenario focused on the dangers associated with airport terminal ramp operations to include collisions between aircraft and vehicles and the threat of fuel spills, fire and injuries as a result. Our combined goal is to exercise community emergency response plans and capabilities so the Lincoln Airport and supporting entities are best prepared to handle worst-case scenarios related to the traveling public.

The Nebraska Air National Guard supported the Lincoln Airport Authority operations and administration staff who were the lead entity for this exercise. Other support agencies included the Lincoln-Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency, Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, Lincoln Fire and rescue, Lincoln Police Dept, City of Lincoln Radio Shop, United Airlines, Duncan Aviation, and volunteers from Union College.

The interview was by John Williams, Fire Captain, with the Nebraska Air National Fire Department
