This month is all about bridges, specifically the bridges that connected the Rock Island Arsenal to the mainland on both sides. The fourth and current Government Bridge that was constructed in 1896 and remains in structurally viable condition. The first bridge spanned the river in 1856 in a different location. The ASC History Office, supported by the Rock Island Arsenal Fire Department, sought out the piers to this historic bridge in Sylvan Slough.
