NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Kathryn Firsching, assistant district counsel for the Nashville District, is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District’s Employee of the Month for September 2012.
Firsching is recognized for her significant contributions to the preparation of Motions to Dismiss filed Oct. 2, 2012.
Bill Woodard, district counsel of the Nashville District, said Firsching efforts included leading daily coordination and input between the Nashville District, the Great Lakes and Ohio River Division, USACE Headquarters, the Department of Justice and the local U.S. Attorney’s Office.
“The 2010 Flood litigation has been identified as nationally significant litigation by the Chief Counsel's office,” said Woodard. “These motions to dismiss have the potential to eliminate over $1.5 billion of lawsuits without lengthy litigation.”
Lt. Col. James A. DeLapp, Nashville District commander said her commitment and initiative to the Nashville District’s mission makes her an outstanding employee.
“She is a role model employee whose ‘can do’ attitude is an example for others to emulate,” said DeLapp. “Her professionalism, dedication to mission execution, and superior performance is a credit to the Nashville District, the region, and the Corps of Engineers.”
Beginning her career with the Office of Counsel in 1992, Firsching has practiced many areas of law that include Hazardous Toxic and Radioactive Waste, Tort, Regulatory, Navigation/Admiralty Accidents, Water Supply, National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act and the National Historic Preservation Act. She also spent time as a project manager for four months in 2000, worked at the USACE Headquarters Office of Chief Counsel on national hydropower and water supply projects/policy for four months in 2002, and spent four months in Sacramento District as Senior Counsel for Civil Works in 2011.
Firsching has a son named Jacob (15) and is involved in many activities when away from the office. She enjoys partaking in various sports (tennis, cycling and hiking), working outside in the yard and at community garden projects, cooking and trying new restaurants and viewing the arts (theater, plays, movies, concerts, symphonies, art galleries and exhibits).
