CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – Soldiers and service members from Third Army/ARCENT, Marine Corps Forces Central Command and Air Forces Central Command attended the first-ever “Access Thanksgiving” at the Embassy of the United States Kuwait City, Kuwait Nov. 18, 2012.
The event, which was attended by more than 40 Kuwaiti high school students, was an opportunity for service members to share one of America’s most celebrated holidays with students who are learning English in an English Access Microscholarship Program. The extra-curricular, United States sponsored program is a two-year workshop that introduces Kuwaiti youth to American culture, community service and career enhancement resources.
“Tonight is a great opportunity to not only practice some of your English but experience a true American tradition,” said Ambassador Matthew H. Tueller, speaking to the Kuwaiti youth. “Thanksgiving gives everyone a chance to remember what they are grateful for and to appreciate the relationships we have together.”
After a brief presentation about colleges abroad in the United States, the students were given an opportunity to practice their English with the service members.
“The majority [of students] wanted to study abroad and become doctors and engineers,” said Gunnery Sgt. Omar L. Abadie from MARCENT. “Their English was pretty good and the staff is doing a terrific job teaching and counseling these kids.”
The service members and Kuwaiti youth were served a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, featuring cranberry sauce, stuffing and turkey. Despite the festive atmosphere, one student said the class already had a goal for next year.
“I hope next year we will be able to enjoy Thanksgiving in the United States.”
