SAN ANTONIO -- From books to boots and from clothes to computers, the new thrift shop set to open on Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston has something for almost everyone.
Located in an 8,000-square foot facility at 3100 Zinn Road, near the Outdoor Equipment Center, the thrift shop is set for a grand opening at 10 a.m. Aug. 18, although the facility will be open as of Aug. 15.
“The thrift shop is a long-awaited addition to the Fort Sam Houston community,” said Stephanie Crotty, the shop’s chairperson. “This will be a great place for area residents to shop and to also consign unwanted items for sale.”
Anyone with access to JBSA-Fort Sam Houston can shop at the facility, but people looking to make a consignment must have a Department of Defense ID, to include active duty and retired military, their families and DOD civilians.
“The consignment rate is generous,” said thrift shop co-chair Kelly Oliver. “The consigner receives 75 percent and the remainder goes towards the FSH Spouses’ Club’s scholarship and welfare funds.”
The shop will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, plus the third Saturday of each month. Consignments will be taken each business day from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Volunteers will be available to assist on determining a value for each item consigned. Volunteers are also needed to help out on a weekly basis. Call 221-5794 for more information.
