NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A mailroom clerk at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District Headquarters recently gained a little heavenly recognition at his place of worship for delivering his good will.
Roger Heights Baptist Church recognized Phillip Sanford during a special service July 15, 2012 as its “Man of the Year” for exemplifying the characteristic of good stewardship.
Deirdre Jones, an assistant professor at Tennessee State University who attends church with Sanford, said he is a longtime faithful and dedicated member of Roger Heights, and his selection came with no opposition or competition.
“His love and devotion to God and his church has progressively been evident by his kind and gentle demeanor and his ready-and-willing work ethic,” Jones said.
Sanford said it is nice to be recognized by his church that he enjoys attending and supporting. “I helped out wherever,” he said. “I enjoy singing in the choir.”
At the Nashville District, Sanford is a postal mainstay and employee of the district’s mail contractor, Government Services Inc., an “Ability One” employer. This designation means the company participates in a Federal initiative to help people who are blind or have other significant disabilities find employment by working within a national network of over 600 nonprofit agencies that sell products and services to the U.S. government.
Sanford has been delivering the mail to Corps offices since 1989 and customers along his delivery route appreciate him for his promptness, professionalism and cheerfulness.
“Phillip performs his duties with a smile and a great attitude, and we know we can always depend upon him to take care of our mail,” said Janet Smith, commander’s secretary in the Executive Office, who depends on Sanford to deliver important correspondence. “I am thrilled to know he was recognized as ‘Man of the Year’ at his church!”
Theodore Caldwell, a coworker, said he’s happy for Sanford because he’s a good person and a hard worker. Jonathan Grunau, project manager for the Mail and Supply Centers, added that the recognition is great news for the whole team.
“He is a very dedicated employee,” Grunau said. “His cheerful nature and reliability have endeared him to us, and also with many of our Corps of Engineers customers. We are grateful to have an employee like Phillip that exemplifies our mission.”
Sanford is the contractor’s longest-serving employee with 27 years of service, including 23 of those working contracts for the Nashville District.
