RAF MILDENHALL, England -- Team Mildenhall airmen and their children, kindergarten through 12th grade, participated in the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Job Shadow Day here April 27.
The job shadow day gave the students a first-hand look at various career fields in the Air Force. Students had the opportunity to visit the 100th Civil Engineer Squadron, 100th Communications Squadron, 100th Force Support Squadron, 100th Security Forces Squadron, 100th Logistics Readiness Squadron, 100th Operations Group and 100th Maintenance Group.
While at the 100th CES, participants were able to try on firefighting equipment and a nuclear, biological, chemical suit and gas mask.
"It was intriguing for many of the kids to be exposed to our chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear ensemble and many were ecstatic about the opportunity to try it on and experience a little of what mom and dad do," said Staff Sgt. Jesse Furse, 100th CES Emergency Management plans and operations.
In addition to trying on the equipment, students were educated on the importance of CBRN skills.
"CBRN survival skills are essential for all military members and the skills learned could play a critical role in our survivability and capability to continue the mission," said Furse.
A KC-135 Stratotanker static display was also available for viewing throughout the day. Pilots and boom operators were available to answer questions about flying the KC-135, and maintainers explained what they do to maintain the aircraft.
Students and parents enjoyed the day while some of the airmen volunteers hoped the participants gained new knowledge about their parents' careers.
"I hope the children took away a better understanding of the individual jobs their parents do on a day-to-day basis, and the other careers and personnel they work hand-in-hand with to accomplish the mission," said Airman 1st Class Steven Carroll, 100th CES readiness and emergency management.
