KABUL, Afghanistan -- The following is a statement from Gen. John R. Allen, commander, International Security Assistance Force, regarding the insurgent attack on the units of the Afghan National Security Forces in Khamdesh district, Nuristan province.

“Earlier today insurgents attacked elements of the Afghan Uniformed Police, Afghan Local Police and Afghan National Army. The ANA, with support from coalition ground and air forces, quickly responded to this initial attack.

Realizing they could not defeat the ANSF, the insurgents once again turned their brutal attack against civilians. Tragically the insurgents killed or seriously wounded a number of women and children in today’s battle. Additionally, during this attack, insurgents set fire to six Afghan buildings and a mosque.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those killed and wounded by the Taliban today.”
