MOUNT JULIET, Tenn. – The scores turned in here today at the 2012 Society of American Military Engineers Scholarship Golf Scramble didn’t really matter much to the 18 teams and 72 competitors. The important result is together they chipped in approximately $5,000 at Windtree Golf Course for engineering scholarships to be awarded by the SAME Nashville Post.
Lt. Col. James A. DeLapp, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Nashville District commander and SAME Nashville Post president, thanked the golfers and sponsors for their generosity and interest in growing the engineers of the future.
“Everyone had a good time golfing, but the many businesses and agencies represented genuinely wanted to support the scholarships that our post makes available to undergraduate-and graduate-level students in engineering-related fields,” DeLapp said.
Gary Singer of Schneider Electric said he golfed because he wanted to have a good time. Although his team finished at 10 under and did not place in the top three spots, he noted that everyone wins nonetheless because the tournament supports educating engineering students.
This golf scramble is the primary scholarship fundraiser for the SAME Nashville Post.
“We’ve given away over $300,000 in 23 years. We have awarded $1,000 average per scholarship. We have to date never turned down a qualified applicant,” said Peter Schulert, SAME Nashville Post Scholarship Program coordinator. “We gave away just a few days ago over $10,000 in scholarships to nine candidates.”
Schulert encourages students who are interested in applying for scholarships to get more information on the process and program requirements at http://posts.same.org/nashville/scholarships.html. He said if a student does not have a connection to SAME, he or she can apply for a free student membership to qualify.
“Obviously I think the tournament benefits a worthy cause,” stressed Ben Rohrbach, event organizer for the SAME Nashville Post. “As a former SAME Nashville Post Scholarship recipient, I know how important what we’re doing is to the students.
Rohrbach said the corps and sponsors of the event ultimately hire the scholarship recipients, and so the success of their education will directly benefit the organizations and region as a whole. He added that the event is great fun and a way to meet other post members, in a friendly atmosphere, with a little competition and camaraderie as well.
