URUZGAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Uruzgan Provincial Governor, Amir Mohammad Akhundzada, hosted a reintegration shura in the Deh Rawud district, May 12.
The shura was held to present the governor’s goals for the district and strengthen relations between local elders and the various levels of provincial government.
“The governor’s speech focused on the need for peace and an end to fighting in Deh Rawud,” said a coalition special operation forces member who assisted with coordinating the shura. “The shura evolved into a town hall type of event where various community topics were discussed, including the need for education, construction projects and healthcare.”
Attendees included provincial National Directorate of Security Chief, Khan Mohammad Khan, and Uruzgan senator, Azizullah Khan. Other attendees included the Combined Team Uruzgan commander, the Uruzgan Provincial Reconstruction Team, coalition SOF representatives and approximately 200 elders from throughout the Deh Rawud district.
“The meeting had an extremely positive impact on the population’s perception of Governor Akhundzada and the provincial government,” said a coalition SOF member. “Governor Akhundzada has continually demonstrated a desire to interact with Uruzgan’s populace, showing concern for the thoughts and ideas of his constituents.”
The event marked Akhundzada’s first visit to Deh Rawud since being appointed as the provincial governor in April.
“Governor Akhundzada made a concerted effort throughout the event to applaud and highlight the successes of the district governor and chief of police,” said an SOF member. “This gesture will likely bring the district and provincial leadership closer together and may improve coordination and support between the two levels of government.”
