COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The promise of expert shooting and a fun afternoon drew a large crowd to the U.S. Olympic Training Center Indoor Shooting Range on the third day of competition in the 2012 Warrior Games.
The Warrior Games feature top athletes from across the Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and Special Operations Command who are wounded, ill or injured. Veterans and service members compete in a variety of sporting events for individual or team medals and points toward the Chairman’s Cup.
The Army team struggled early in the preliminary rounds and their scores from those rounds, while good enough to advance into the finals, made it difficult for them to rebound and fight for the medaling positions.
No Army shooter was able to medal in the air rifle categories.
The team, however, would not be completely shut out from the podium. Veterans Justin Miller and Benjamin Trescott each won a bronze in the air pistol shooting categories and Sgt. Fred Prince took home his second silver of the games. Shooting categories are determined by the U.S. Paralympic committee and address what limitations a shooter might possess.
“I didn’t do my best. I could have done better, but I am definitely still proud to have won the bronze for the Army,” said Miller, a Gailon, Ohio, native. “I was happy to receive the medal, and I will continue to participate in this sport as long as possible.”
The Army athletes still have an opportunity to make a run for the Chairman’s Cup with swimming, track and field, wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball still to be decided
