MIAMI — U.S. Southern Command will conduct a ceremony to commemorate the awarding of the Joint Meritorious Unit Award to the Doral-based command, and to recognize the command's Enlisted Persons of the Year, Tuesday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. at the command's headquarters.
The men and women assigned to U.S. Southern Command were officially awarded the Joint Meritorious Unit Award in January in recognition of their service to the nation during the period of May 1, 2009 to April 30, 2011.
The award recognizes the command's humanitarian and disaster relief efforts during the designated dates and specifically hails the "unprecedented" earthquake relief efforts SOUTHCOM led in Haiti during Operation Unified Response in early 2010.
The award also cites the command's efforts to coordinate with partner nation forces and other U.S. Government agencies to confront the regional threats posed by transnational criminal organizations and illicit trafficking.
The Enlisted Person of the Year recognizes the superior work of enlisted service members assigned to the command.
