FORT BENNING, Ga. — Expecting women of Fort Benning, Ga., gathered at the Kelley Hill Recreation Center Friday, April 20, for a day of support sponsored by Operation Homefront Georgia.
The event, which was sponsored by Carter’s Clothing and Kids In Distressed Situations, was attended by nearly 200 soon-to-be mothers.
"We heard there were a lot of expectant moms down here and we want to be part of giving them goodies to take home," said Kim Scofi, director of Operation Homefront Georgia. “We want to make sure these moms-to-be have everything they need as they go forward."
For the moms, support like this event is key for a successful pregnancy.
"I'm really excited to be here at Fort Benning," said Staff Sgt. Colin Wallace, Medical Activity, Fort Benning, who is three months pregnant. “There is a lot of support that goes on in the military.”
Deployments are common in the modern Army, and that can make starting a family complicated.
“Being married for six years, we found out two days after our sixth anniversary that we were pregnant with our first,” explained Wallace. “I'm really excited and I couldn't be in a better place!"
The day offered mothers-to-be more than a bag of goodies to take away.
"I’m really excited about this one, because so many people are going to be here,” said Ashley Broughton. “I always like to meet people."
Along with meeting other expecting mothers attendees took home notes and useful information about resources available to them.
"We want them to know there are other people out there with their struggles," said Scofi. "It's not uncharted territory."
