KABUL, Afghanistan – Members from the 648th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Task Force Hydra, a National Guard unit out of Columbus, Ga., went on several missions on March 7, 2012, and met with some key leaders at an Afghan National Army Compound, in order to offer assistance.
Access to land that was cultivated by farmers in previous years had been lost due to an expansion of the New Kabul Base Cluster’s perimeter through a lease agreement with the ANA. Task Force Hydra soldiers located on New Kabul Compound reached out to their families to send small kitchen items, which they donated to the farmers at the ANA compound as a sign of good will.
“The farmers don’t have much so we provided towels, socks, kitchen utensils, and T-shirts from the Atlanta area as gifts. They were very appreciative,” said Lt. Col. Todd Perkins, the officer in charge of NKC.
Next, the group went on to meet with some local national contractors that handle the waste water removal for NKC. Waste water removal is an important base support group function that supports the tenants of NKC.
“They are diligent and dependable, especially over the last few weeks while there has been unrest in the city. We presented framed Letters of Appreciation to them and they were really excited,” said Perkins. “It was awesome to see these men so excited and proud to support our efforts here in their country.”
