CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune started a new waterline project recently that will utilize three raw water production wells to draw water from the Verona Loop and K-range area and transfer it to the existing water treatment system at Hospital Point.

“The purpose of the project is to provide potable water for the growth of the base,” said Cmdr. Marc Delao, officer in charge of construction with MCB Camp Lejeune, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Marine Corps Installations East.

Drilling at Hospital Point is scheduled to begin March 19, and contractors will be working from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Due to construction, the Marine Corps Community Services’ recreational area at that location will be closed from March 19 through 30.

Another impact includes some amount noise caused by the drilling. Patrons who live in the Hospital Point housing area, within a 1,000-meter range of the construction will hear sounds measured at 45 decibels. Within a 250-meter range the sound is measured at 57 dB.

“It’s not going to be a lot of noise,” said Delao. “Most people won’t even hear it unless they step outside. A normal conversation is measured between 60 to 70 decibels.”

There will be no impacts on water service. According to base officials, the project is scheduled to be complete in May.
