MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - Delalio Elementary School students jumped with enthusiasm at the annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser inside the school gymnasium aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River, Feb. 14.

Students in schools nationwide participate in Jump Rope for Heart, an annual event that raises money for the American Heart Association. This allows the AHA to fund lifesaving heart and stroke research.

The fundraiser also provides community and educational youth programs that benefit children with a great form of exercise said Samuel Jones, Delalio Elementary School physical education teacher.

The day was set up for each grade to have an hour of exercise with two classes of students at one time participating in different jump-roping activities, as well as aerobics exercises.

As the students came into the gymnasium, Jones would designate certain spots marked by colorful squares on the floor where the students positioned themselves for the activities. He then began going through stretches ensuring students avoided injury.

They began their hour with aerobics as music played over the speaker system. Daniela Lopez, MCAS New River Fitness Center aerobics instructor, led the students in various aerobics moves designed to get the children’s heartbeat up.

The students then began to jump rope. At first, they jumped individual but then worked together for Double Dutch. Double Dutch is a game in which two long jump ropes are turned in opposite directions and are jumped by one or more students.

They were joined by Marines from the School of Infantry East’s student administration company, who came to assist with the event.

“I’m glad we could come out and help the students at Delalio,” said Lance Cpl. Rob Newton. “The kids seemed to enjoy having us here, and it’s good to get out and help others.”

As the students were jumping rope and performing the aerobic exercises, Jones walked through the gym assisting the students and swinging jump ropes for them.

“The kids are absolutely excited about jumping rope,” said Jones. “I have been working with them, teaching them the different techniques of jumping rope, and they show their excitement every time.”

The students at Delalio jumped rope and had a fun time while learning about the importance of exercise and maintaining a healthy heart, said Jones.

“With exercise in the kids’ everyday activities, they can significantly reduce the chances of heart disease,” said Jones. “When the kids are jumping rope or exercising, they are creating a healthier life.”
