ZHARAY DISTRICT, Kandahar province, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army soldiers and soldiers in 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, have been working to increase the literacy rate in the Sangsar area of Zharay district, Kandahar province, Afghanistan.
Recently Battle Company, 1-32 Infantry soldiers and their ANA counterparts distributed solar powered/hand crank radios and literacy packets at the Sangsar Bazaar, and promoted the Radio Literacy and “Knowledge is Light” programs.
About 40 radios were distributed to the appreciative villagers. ANA and Battle Company soldiers told the recipients about the programs that are broadcast three times a day, Saturday through Thursday.
With their new radios, locals can tune into the Howz-E-Madad radio station and begin to learn to read and write.
The ANA soldiers are taking even more steps towards improving the literacy rates in Sangsar by leading tutorial sessions at the Sangsar Education Center to ensure villagers understand the radio literacy sessions and literacy books.
