GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala -- Long time Pittsburgh, Pa., resident John J. Straub was promoted to the rank of captain in the United States Marine Corps during a ceremony conducted by the U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala, and his fellow Marines, in the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City, Dec. 1.
Straub, who received his Bachelor's of Arts from Grove City College in 2006 and a Master's of Science from Robert Morris University in 2007, is currently serving as a communications officer in the Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group in Virginia Beach, Va.
Since being commissioned in November 2007, he has provided communications support to nearly 10,000 Marines in support of various operations throughout the globe to include Operation Enduring Freedom.
Straub lives in the Virginia Beach area of Virginia with his, rescued, three-year old Boxer "Zoe."
His father Daniel Straub and mother Karen Straub (formerly Jordan of Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) still resides in Presto outside of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania.
Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group is a unit in the Marine Corps that coordinates, manages, executes, and evaluates United States Marine Corps Security Cooperation programs and activities, to include assessment, planning, related education and training, and advisor support to ensure unity of effort in building Partner Nation Security Forces capacity and capability in order to facilitate USMC and regional Marine Forces component support to combatant commanders security cooperation objectives.
